first_imgA local fisherman who fell overboard from his boat this afternoon has died in hospital.Letterkenny General HospitalThe man, who is in his 50s and from Dunfanagahy, died from his injuries at Letterkenny General Hospital.The man fell overboard from the boat six miles off the coast of Horn Head. It is not known how he fell overboard but it is understood he was in the water for more than 20 minutes.He was eventually plucked from the water by a local boat and transferred to Mulroy Coastguard before being winched to the Rescue 118 helicopter and rushed to Letterkenny General Hospital.Both men were wearing lifejackets but the victim was understood to be wearing heavy oilskins.However, despite the best efforts of doctors to save his life, the man passed away just after 5pm. A full investigation has now been launched into how the victim ended up in the water in what were described as “choppy seas.”As well as the Mulroy Coast guard, Lough Swilly Shannon lifeboat and the Arranmore Lifeboat were also launched.The dead man was extremely popular and well-known in the Dunfanaghy area.A single man, he had fished for more than 30 years.Locals said he was a very gentle man who looked after his mother. “He was a big gentle man and he was very kind to his mother and made a very honest living from fishing.“Nobody knows yet what happened but both men were very careful and very experienced fishermen.“The entire community is just devastated and very sad for what has happened. He will be sadly missed and it seems very unfair that he was taken from this life in this way.”The tragedy is the second to strike the Co Donegal village in just a few days.
