first_imgTwenty-year-old Shawn Spellen, of Lot 143 Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, was in the wee hours ofDead: Shawn SpellenMonday killed after the vehicle in which he was travelling suffered a puncture and turned turtle.According to information received, the accident occurred about 03:30h at Bushy Park Public Road, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).The now dead man was heading home when one of the tyres of the motor car got punctured, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which reportedly toppled several times before coming to a halt.An injured Spellen was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital before being transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the motor vehicle and three others also sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital.The deceased’s mother, Pamela Spellen, when contacted told Guyana Times that her son left home on Sunday evening with friends to attend a function at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Bank Demerara.She noted that she later received a phone call from one of his friends, who informed her that her son was involved in an accident and had been taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital. The distressed mother stated that when she arrived at the medical institution, she saw her son lying on a bed with blood oozing from his head and nostrils.She said the doctors at the Leonora Hospital made recommendation for him to be transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, along with the four other injured persons. She relayed that her son was placed in the ambulance, but took his last breath on his way to the medical facility.In a soft voice she stated, “After they left Vreed-en-Hoop, he probably went to Parika with his friends.”Pamela Spellen confirmed that her son, who she described as very loving and caring, was a Private attached to the Guyana Defence Force. He joined the army in mid-2013.The young man leaves to mourn his mother and four siblings. The Police are conducting an investigation into the fatal accident. Over the past weeks, several persons have lost their lives on the roadways with speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol being the main factors in the crashes.last_img read more
